Yoga is not just for adults! It can give children very important life skills that can help them succeed in the world. It helps manage anxiety with breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. Increases body awareness and mindfulness by going through a variety of yoga poses. It helps improve flexibility, which can reduce the chance of injury. Yoga can also reduce challenging behaviors by providing a physical outlet for kids to express themselves, as they work on clearing their minds and perfecting their poses.
The average attention span for a child can be as little as 3-8 minutes. I create fun, inspirational classes to encourage a child's natural thirst for knowledge while practicing mindfulness and meditation. I combine simple yoga poses with engaging songs and stories that exercise social, sensory and motor skills while increasing flexibility.
I've learned that there is much more to it than simply leading a group through a series of asanas. I have the ability to relate yoga to my students, and address their needs. My students respond to bandhas (energy locks), agni sara (essence of fire), and other subtle practices, and they love the sweet buzz at the end of a deep shavasana (final relaxation) or the challenge of steadying the mind. Some want to approach yoga as an athletic endeavor, but most are looking to overcome emotional and physical pain, find peace, and discover self-mastery.
